About Kara

Hi there! My name is Kara and I am so happy you are visiting my little piece of the web.

Children are a precious gift and responsibility. If you are like me, you don’t trust a stranger with your children. I hope this page helps you to get to know me a little better so that like Forrest Gump says to Dorothy Harris “Well, now we ain’t strangers anymore.”

I am a military wife (who will never move) living in Southern Pines, North Carolina with my husband and three children- ages 2, 5, and 8. Being a military wife has taught me a lot about life. I’ve learned patience, honor, sacrifice, and the importance of every single day spent with our loved ones. Today is a blessing while tomorrow is an uncertainty. My goal is to document today’s memories so they can be remembered and treasured forever. Faces change and kids grow up, but you can remember this special time whenever you look at the beautiful portraits we create from your session.

A list about me that is in no particular order:

  • I am a registered, licensed, and insured professional photographer through the state of North Carolina.
  • Our family has a German Shorthaired Pointer who is a retired hunting dog.
  • I believe food tastes better when someone else cooks it.
  • My husband and I are from Texas and met at Texas Tech University.
  • I taught middle school and high school science before deciding to dive into photography full-time. I love photographing babies but miss the daily interaction with teenagers. Yep, teenagers!
  • With an unlimited budget, my entire wardrobe would be from Anthropologie.
  • I seek masters of their craft. Whether it be dressmakers, bartenders, woodworkers, or gardeners, I appreciate those that truly embrace the art of handmade items.
  • I won the State of Texas Rookie Teacher of the Year award my second year of teaching.
  • I shoot with a Nikon D810 and a variety of lenses, but my favorite studio lens is the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. Outdoors I like to shoot with my 70-200 2.8. My digital darkroom consists of Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 running off a workstation PC and NEC wide-gamut monitor.
  • Visiting Croatia, India, Ireland, and the Maldives are on my bucket list.
  • I’ve always had an artistic streak but never found my medium. I actually stumbled into photography in college while taking a field landscape course with the famous Wyman Meinzer. Since then I have honed my skills and switched to a digital format.
  • Watching my daughter dance, my son play sports, and all three children play and laugh together are my favorite things to do.
  • My favorite subjects to photograph are six month olds who’ve just learned to sit up!
  • As a former teacher, continuing my own photographic education is very important to me. I am constantly taking workshops, reading books, and working with other photographers to improve and hone my skills. I don’t believe someone should ever stop learning.
